About the Bellingham Sonics

The Bellingham Sonics are more than just a basketball program—we’re a family. Our mission is to give young athletes the opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence, and experience the game they love in a supportive, community-driven environment. Led by head coach Michael McLin, our teams are built on passion, development, and mentorship—shaping athletes both on and off the court.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we’re committed to making AAU basketball more accessible. Our sponsored model ensures more kids have the chance to play regardless of financial barriers.

Beyond basketball, we focus on building confidence, leadership, and resilience. Our coaches bring strong mentorship and a commitment to developing not just better players, but better people. We believe when kids feel supported, they thrive—and no child should ever be left on the sidelines.

She is also a dedicated community leader and founder of the Bellingham Sonics, committed to making youth sports accessible and eliminating financial barriers for young athletes.

Growing up, Kena was a multi-sport athlete, competing in basketball, volleyball, softball, track, skiing, and ballet, while also participating in 4-H. Raised by a single mother, she experienced firsthand the sacrifices required to afford sports, camps, and lift tickets, along with the kindness of those who helped along the way. Inspired by these experiences, she is passionate about paying it forward, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate, compete, and thrive—

regardless of financial circumstances.

Ian is a lifelong Bellingham native with deep roots across Whatcom County. He's spent  four decades building relationships in the community he calls home.

Growing up, competitive sports played a meaningful role in shaping who Ian is today. Returning home from running track in college gave him a new appreciation for those experiences and a desire to give back to the next generation. He spent seven years coaching track and field at Squalicum High School, finding deep fulfillment in helping young athletes grow both on and off the track. That passion for youth development is what drew him to the Bellingham Sonics.

When he's not helping clients navigate one of life's biggest decisions, Ian is fully immersed in the Pacific Northwest lifestyle he loves - snowboarding at Mt. Baker, mountain biking and hiking Galbraith and Chuckanut with his family and dogs, and staying active in the community he has always called home.
